History and Evolution of SEO
What is SEO?
SEO is the process of orienting your website to rank higher on a search engine in relevant keywords.
History of SEO
Google is the most popular search engine. Google began as a research project of Larry Page, who enrolled in Stanford's computer science graduate program. Initially google was a subdomain under their university website. Later in 1998 they formed Google as a company and registered in google.com domain. At first the google sent the search result to the submitted email id in 24 hours. It was not popular until 2001 when world trade center was attacked by Al- Qaeda. During this time people across the world searched about world trade center in google and they failed to provide the search result. This made google officials to announce a meeting to find out why they could not provide the result. They found most of the webpages were not crawlable by google. In order to make the websites crawlable google decided to share SEO starter guide to webmasters to optimize their websites.

Evolution of SEO
Webmasters who followed google guidelines started seeing results and made profit as their business started growing. But later they started doing unethical SEO practices(Black Hat SEO)like keyword stuffing instead of coming up with quality content in their site. So google had to change its algorithm. Initially google was content specific which means focusing on keywords, then changed to link specific. This means, google ranks the website according to the number of links/recommendations/votes they receive from other websites. But this method also failed to provide quality search results as people started selling links. This made google to further change the method to quality link specific. In this method quality of the website who provided the linked is taken to consideration. Google introduced a rating method called Page Ranking where a website is rated from 1 to10. This rating referred to the trust value of that website.
Following this google introduced new tactics called 'Passing the Juice' where the value or the page rank passes with the link they share. But there were cases where the webmaster has to put recommendation links in their website. So in order to not lose their value while sharing the recommendation links 'Rel = nofollow' attribute were introduced. Adding this attribute along with the links could prevent losing their value.
Google had faced some challenges while altering the algorithms. During the period of 2003 to 2008, Google gained more popularity and entered the field of advertisement. Google introduced an advertisement program called Google Adwords or (PPC Pay Per Click) where provided a platform for business people to display their ads. Google Adsense is publishers revenue earning program run by google through which website owners could display the business advertisements in their websites. So people do a lot of alteration in their site to increase their revenue. Any change in the algorithm will affect their revenue which in turn affect google's revenue.
Later in 2008, Personalized search results came into practice. In this google provides customized results based on our previous searches. In 2009, google ranked websites with higher user's interaction to top. Google introduced social media signals in 2010. When people started spending hours on social media, it has became a factor for the ranking of websites. If a website had made social media pages in various platform, there was a higher chance of getting more user interaction and hence better ranking overall.
